In June 2025, ACCA announced the most significant overhaul of its professional qualification in a generation. The redesigned qualification goes live from September 2027. If you are currently studying — or planning to start — this affects the decisions you make about study pace, paper selection, and whether to accelerate your completion timeline.

Key fact:Announcement date: June 2025. Effective date: September 2027. Current qualification remains fully valid until then. Transition arrangements for students mid-qualification will be published by ACCA ahead of the changeover.

    • **If you plan to complete before September 2027:** The current qualification is unaffected. You can complete under the existing structure with 2 options papers required.
    • **If you will still be studying when September 2027 arrives:** ACCA will publish transition rules. Historically, ACCA has provided generous transition arrangements — papers passed under the current structure typically carry forward. Do not stop studying now because of the 2027 change.
    • **The Data Science Professional option:** If technology and data analytics are your professional direction, this may be worth waiting for. Details of the syllabus had not been fully published as of mid-2026.
    • **Only 1 options paper required:** Under the new structure, you sit one instead of two options papers at Strategic Professional. This is significant if you were planning your options selection — more flexibility, lower overall exam burden at the final level.
    • **Remote CBE phaseout:** From March 2026, remote (home-based) exams are being withdrawn in regions where approved centre provision exists. Check your local centre availability and book early.
Tip:The safest strategy for most current candidates: keep studying at pace and aim to complete under the current structure before September 2027. The qualification you earn is the same ACCA letters regardless of which version of the structure you complete under.

Why ACCA Is Making These Changes

ACCA cited three main drivers: the rapid integration of AI and automation into accounting and finance roles; the growing importance of sustainability reporting (accelerated by IFRS S1, IFRS S2, and ESRS frameworks); and the shift in employer expectations toward accountants who can interpret data, not just produce it. The Data Science Professional option and the embedded AI content directly reflect employer feedback that current graduates lack practical technology skills.
