AZ-305 Gets Its Biggest Overhaul in Years — New Prerequisite, New AI Content, and a Higher Bar
AZ-104 is now a formal prerequisite
The most consequential change is structural: Microsoft has formalized AZ-104 (Azure Administrator Associate) as a prerequisite for AZ-305. Previously this was a recommendation; it is now required. If you have not earned AZ-104, you cannot sit AZ-305. This aligns Azure with the model where associate-level credentials gate access to expert-level exams.
What is new in the exam content
The April 2026 update is described by training providers as the most significant AZ-305 revision since the exam launched. Three areas received the biggest additions:
Practice AZ-305 questions while you read
Questions graded, hints, and explained.
- AI architecture and governance — approximately 10-12% of the exam; expects candidates to design Azure solutions that integrate Azure OpenAI, apply responsible AI principles, and govern AI workloads at scale
- End-to-end infrastructure design — previously the exam tested components in isolation; the updated version includes more scenario questions requiring candidates to reason across networking, identity, compute, and data tiers simultaneously
- AZ-104 alignment — questions now assume deep AZ-104 knowledge on Entra ID, Azure Container Apps, Azure Arc, and Copilot administration, which was added to AZ-104 in the parallel April 2026 update
Who is affected
Candidates mid-preparation using materials from before April 2026 need to supplement with AI architecture content. Those who planned to skip AZ-104 and jump straight to AZ-305 need to revise their study timeline — factor in 6-8 weeks for AZ-104 preparation first. Candidates who already hold AZ-104 and are up to date on the April 2026 AZ-104 changes should review the Azure Container Apps and Azure Arc sections specifically.
Recommended study sequence (post-April 2026)
- AZ-900 (optional but efficient for Azure newcomers)
- AZ-104 — now required, includes Entra ID, Azure Arc, Container Apps, Copilot admin
- AZ-305 — design questions span networking, identity, compute, data, and AI
