Name two other substances that can each be reacted with a dilute acid to make zinc chloride. Do not refer to zinc carbonate in your answer.
How to approach this question
To make a salt (zinc chloride), you can react an acid (hydrochloric acid) with a suitable base, alkali, or metal.\n- A reactive metal (zinc is reactive enough).\n- An insoluble base (like a metal oxide or hydroxide).\n- A soluble base / alkali (metal hydroxides can be alkalis).\nThe question asks for substances other than zinc carbonate.
Full Answer
1. Zinc / Zinc metal\n2. Zinc oxide / Zinc hydroxide
Zinc chloride is a salt that can be formed by neutralising an acid with a base, or by reacting an acid with a metal. The acid must be hydrochloric acid to provide the chloride ion.\n\nOther substances containing zinc that react with hydrochloric acid include:\n1. **Zinc metal (Zn):** A metal above hydrogen in the reactivity series will react with an acid to produce a salt and hydrogen gas. \n Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl₂(aq) + H₂(g)\n2. **Zinc oxide (ZnO):** A basic metal oxide will react with an acid in a neutralisation reaction to produce a salt and water.\n ZnO(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl₂(aq) + H₂O(l)\n3. **Zinc hydroxide (Zn(OH)₂):** A metal hydroxide (an insoluble base) will react with an acid in a neutralisation reaction to produce a salt and water.\n Zn(OH)₂(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl₂(aq) + 2H₂O(l)
Common mistakes
✗ Naming another zinc salt (e.g., zinc sulfate).\n✗ Naming a non-zinc compound (e.g., magnesium oxide).\n✗ Naming zinc carbonate, which the question excludes.
