AQA GCSE · Question 12 · How the economy works

Explain one advantage of using supply-side policies.

How to approach this question

State one advantage of supply-side policies and then provide a brief explanation of how this advantage is achieved. Think about the main goals of supply-side policies, such as increasing efficiency, productivity, or competition.

Full Answer

One advantage is that they can reduce inflation. By increasing the productive capacity of the economy (shifting aggregate supply to the right), supply-side policies allow the economy to grow without creating upward pressure on prices, thus tackling cost-push inflation.
Supply-side policies aim to improve the long-run productive potential of an economy. One key advantage is that they can lead to non-inflationary economic growth. By making markets work more efficiently, improving labour productivity through training, or encouraging investment through tax cuts, these policies shift the long-run aggregate supply curve to the right. This means that the economy can produce more goods and services at any given price level, allowing for GDP to increase without causing the demand-pull or cost-push inflation that might result from using demand-side policies alone. Other valid advantages include reducing the natural rate of unemployment or improving the balance of payments through increased competitiveness.

Common mistakes

Being too vague, for example, just saying 'it improves the economy'. You need to specify how, e.g., by reducing inflation or increasing potential growth.
