Based on the data shown in Table 4, draw a bar chart for the CPI for the years 2018, 2020 and 2021.

How to approach this question

1. Draw and label the x-axis (Year) and y-axis (CPI). 2. Choose a suitable scale for the y-axis that accommodates the data range (e.g., from 119 to 122). 3. For each required year (2018, 2020, 2021), draw a bar up to the corresponding CPI value on the y-axis. 4. Ensure the bars are of equal width and are clearly labelled. 5. Give the chart a clear title.

Full Answer

A bar chart should be drawn with 'Year' on the x-axis and 'CPI' on the y-axis. The y-axis should be clearly labelled with an appropriate scale (e.g., from 119 to 122). There should be three bars: - For 2018, a bar reaching 119.7 on the y-axis. - For 2020, a bar reaching 121.1 on the y-axis. - For 2021, a bar reaching 120.8 on the y-axis. The bars should be of equal width and clearly separated. The chart should have a title, 'CPI: 2018, 2020 and 2021'.
A bar chart is used to represent categorical data with rectangular bars. In this case, the categories are the years. The height of each bar corresponds to the CPI value for that year. The chart must have clearly labelled axes, a title, and an appropriate scale to be awarded full marks. The data points to be plotted are (2018, 119.7), (2020, 121.1), and (2021, 120.8). The data for 2019 and 2022 should be ignored as per the question.

Common mistakes

Plotting all five years instead of just the three requested. Using an inappropriate scale on the y-axis that makes the bars difficult to read or inaccurate. Forgetting to label axes or provide a title.
