    AQA GCSE · Question 01.3 · Number

    Write 10 000 as a power of 10

    How to approach this question

To write a number as a power of 10, count the number of zeros after the 1. In 10 000, there are four zeros. So, 10 000 can be written as 10 to the power of 4, which is 10⁴.

    Full Answer

    10⁴
    Powers of 10 are a way of writing large numbers. 10¹ = 10, 10² = 100, 10³ = 1000, and so on. The power (or exponent) simply tells you how many zeros follow the 1. For the number 10 000, we can count the zeros: 10 000 has four zeros. Therefore, 10 000 = 10 × 10 × 10 × 10 = 10⁴.

    Common mistakes

✗ Writing 10 x 1000 is not a power of 10.\n✗ Writing 4¹⁰ is incorrect; the base is 10 and the power is 4.\n✗ Counting the digits instead of the zeros and writing 10⁵ is a common error.
