AQA GCSE · Question 12.2 · Statistics

Describe the correlation shown in the scatter graph.

How to approach this question

1. **Type of correlation:** Look at the general trend of the points. Do they go up from left to right (positive), down from left to right (negative), or is there no pattern (no correlation)? 2. **Strength of correlation:** Look at how close the points are to forming a straight line. If they are very close, the correlation is strong. If they are spread out but still show a trend, it is weak. If they are in between, it is moderate.

Full Answer

Type of correlation: Positive Strength of correlation: Strong
**Type of correlation:** As you look at the graph from left to right, the distance run increases. As the distance increases, the time taken also generally increases. The points follow an upward trend from left to right. This indicates a **positive correlation**. **Strength of correlation:** The points on the scatter graph are all quite close to a straight line that could be drawn through them. They are not widely scattered. This indicates a **strong correlation**. So, the graph shows a strong, positive correlation.

Common mistakes

✗ Confusing positive and negative correlation. ✗ Describing the relationship in words (e.g., "the longer the run, the longer it takes") without using the correct statistical term "positive correlation". ✗ Misjudging the strength (e.g., calling it weak when the points are close to a line).
