The process which releases energy inside stars is __________.

How to approach this question

Read the sentence and the options in the box. Identify the process that describes how stars generate energy. Write the correct word in the blank space.

Full Answer

fusion
Stars generate energy through a process called nuclear fusion. In the core of a star, immense pressure and temperature cause lighter atomic nuclei (like hydrogen) to fuse together to form heavier nuclei (like helium). This process releases a vast amount of energy in the form of light and heat. Combustion is a chemical reaction (burning), and conduction is a method of heat transfer, neither of which powers a star.

Common mistakes

✗ Choosing combustion, which is burning and a chemical process, not a nuclear one.\n✗ Choosing conduction, which is a method of heat transfer, not energy generation.
