Figure 9Time in weeksBody temperature in °C0102030400246810

The echidna is a mammal that lives in Australia. Figure 9 shows how the body temperature of the echidna varies during the cold winter months. Give the lowest and highest body temperatures for the echidna shown in Figure 9.

How to approach this question

1. To find the highest temperature, look for the highest point (the peak) the line on the graph reaches. Read the value on the y-axis (Body temperature) that corresponds to this peak. 2. To find the lowest temperature, look for the lowest point (the trough) the line reaches. Read the corresponding value on the y-axis.

Full Answer

Lowest temperature = 4 °C Highest temperature = 32 °C
By inspecting the graph: - The highest points (peaks) of the line consistently reach the same level. This level is slightly above the 30 °C mark. A reasonable estimate is 32 °C. - The lowest points (troughs) of the line are between the 0 °C and 10 °C marks, but closer to 0. A reasonable estimate is 4 °C. The question asks for one value for each, so the most representative peak and trough should be chosen.

Common mistakes

✗ Misreading the scale on the y-axis. ✗ Giving a time from the x-axis instead of a temperature from the y-axis.
