AQA GCSE · Question 06.7 · Homeostasis and Response

On a different day the athlete used 6000 kJ of energy to evaporate sweat. The athlete's energy intake was 24 000 kJ. Calculate the percentage of the athlete's energy intake used for evaporation of sweat.

How to approach this question

1. Identify the energy used for sweat: 6000 kJ. 2. Identify the total energy intake: 24 000 kJ. 3. Use the formula for percentage: (part / whole) × 100. 4. Substitute the values: (6000 / 24000) × 100.

Full Answer

25 %. Working: Percentage = (Energy for sweat / Total energy intake) × 100 Percentage = (6000 kJ / 24 000 kJ) × 100 Percentage = 0.25 × 100 = 25 %
To calculate the percentage, we use the formula: Percentage = (Value / Total Value) × 100% In this case: Value = Energy used for evaporation = 6000 kJ Total Value = Total energy intake = 24 000 kJ Percentage = (6000 / 24000) × 100% First, simplify the fraction: 6000 / 24000 = 6 / 24 = 1 / 4 = 0.25 Then, multiply by 100: 0.25 × 100% = 25% So, 25% of the athlete's energy intake was used for evaporation of sweat.

Common mistakes

✗ Dividing the numbers the wrong way around (24000 / 6000). ✗ Forgetting to multiply by 100 to get the percentage.
