AQA GCSE · Question 03.2 · Politics and Participation

Identify two elections for which the Additional Member voting system is used.

How to approach this question

Recall the different voting systems used for various elections within the UK. The Additional Member System (AMS) is a hybrid system used for devolved assemblies. Name two of these.

Full Answer

1. Scottish Parliament elections. 2. Welsh Senedd (Parliament) elections.
The Additional Member System (AMS) is a form of proportional representation used for elections to the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Senedd, and the London Assembly. Under AMS, voters cast two votes: one for a constituency representative (like in FPTP) and a second for a regional 'list' of candidates for a political party. The list seats are used to 'top up' the constituency seats to make the overall result more proportional.

Common mistakes

Naming elections that use other systems, such as UK General Elections (FPTP) or local council elections in England (FPTP).
