How to approach this question
Read each sentence carefully and look at the diagram.
1. Fission involves the nucleus of an atom. What is the plural of nucleus?
2. The diagram shows a particle hitting the Uranium and three identical particles being released. What particle initiates and is released in a chain reaction?
3. Fission releases a very high-energy form of electromagnetic radiation. Which option from the box fits this description?
Full Answer
1. nuclei
2. neutrons
3. gamma rays
Nuclear fission is the process where the nucleus of a large atom, such as Uranium-235, splits into two smaller nuclei after absorbing a neutron.
1. The energy is stored within the bonds of the atomic **nuclei**.
2. This splitting process releases a large amount of energy, several fast-moving **neutrons**, and electromagnetic radiation. The released neutrons can then go on to cause other uranium nuclei to split, leading to a chain reaction.
3. The electromagnetic radiation released is in the form of **gamma rays**, which are very high-energy photons.
Common mistakes
✗ Confusing neutrons with protons or electrons.
✗ Forgetting that fission involves the nucleus of an atom.
✗ Not knowing that gamma rays are the form of EM radiation released.
