AQA GCSE · Question 20 · Social Stratification

Identify and explain one way in which social class at birth can influence an individual's future life chances.

How to approach this question

First, identify a specific area where social class has an impact (e.g., education, health, employment). Then, explain the process by which a person's class background influences their outcomes in this area. Use sociological concepts like 'cultural capital' or 'material capital' to strengthen your explanation.

Full Answer

One way is through access to education. A child born into a middle-class family is more likely to have parents with higher levels of education who can provide educational support at home. They may also have the material capital to afford private tuition or live in the catchment area of a better-performing school. This gives them a significant advantage in the education system, leading to better qualifications and access to higher-paid jobs in the future, thus reproducing their class advantage.
Life chances refer to the opportunities each individual has to improve their quality of life. Sociologists argue that these are heavily influenced by social class. A person's class background affects their life chances in numerous ways: Education (access to better schools, parental support), Health (diet, housing, access to healthcare, stress levels all vary by class, leading to differences in life expectancy), and Employment (access to professional networks and unpaid internships). These factors often interlink to create a cycle of advantage for the middle and upper classes and a cycle of disadvantage for the working class.

Common mistakes

Being too simplistic, e.g., 'rich kids go to good schools'. A good answer will explain the mechanisms, such as cultural and material capital, that create this outcome.
