AQA GCSE · Question 13.1 · Interpreting Results and Evaluating Findings

You will need to refer to the Data Sheet to answer this question.
Data Sheet - Table 1
Number of films released in the UK by certificate.

Certificate20082018
U10080
PG150180
12A120200
1580150
185040
Total500650

Look at Table 1 in the Data Sheet. Discuss the trends in the number of films given each certificate from 2008 to 2018. Make two distinct comments on the trends.

How to approach this question

Compare the number of films for each certificate in 2008 with the number in 2018. For each certificate, did the number go up or down? Identify one group of certificates that increased and another that decreased, or comment on the biggest change.

Full Answer

1. The number of films with PG, 12A, and 15 certificates increased between 2008 and 2018. 2. The number of films with U and 18 certificates decreased between 2008 and 2018. (Other valid comments: The biggest increase was for 12A films. The total number of films released increased.)
To discuss the trends, we compare the figures for 2008 and 2018 for each certificate category. - **U:** Decreased from 100 to 80. - **PG:** Increased from 150 to 180. - **12A:** Increased from 120 to 200. - **15:** Increased from 80 to 150. - **18:** Decreased from 50 to 40. - **Total:** The total number of films released increased from 500 to 650. From this analysis, we can make several distinct comments: - **Comment 1:** The number of films aimed at older children and teenagers (PG, 12A, 15) all saw an increase. - **Comment 2:** The number of films at the extremes of the age range (U for all, and 18 for adults only) both saw a decrease. - **Comment 3:** The largest numerical increase was for 12A films, which rose by 80. - **Comment 4:** Overall, more films were released in 2018 than in 2008.

Common mistakes

✗ Only making one comment when two are required. ✗ Misreading the table and stating an incorrect trend. ✗ Making two comments that are essentially the same point, e.g., "12A films increased" and "More 12A films were made".
