AQA GCSE · Question 06.3 · Data Visualization and Representation

Use the values from part 6(b) to help you draw a line of best fit on the diagram.

How to approach this question

1. From part 6(b), you know the mean mass is 23 kg and the mean height is 59 cm. This gives you the mean point (23, 59). 2. Plot this mean point on your scatter graph. 3. Draw a straight line that passes through this mean point. 4. Adjust the angle of the line so that it follows the general positive correlation of the data, with about the same number of points on either side of the line.

Full Answer

A line of best fit should be drawn on the scatter graph. It must pass through the mean point (23, 59) and follow the general trend of the data points, with roughly an equal number of points above and below the line.
A line of best fit should represent the general trend of the data. A key rule is that it must pass through the mean point of the data.\nFrom the question, the mean mass is 23 kg.\nFrom part 6(b), we calculated the mean height to be 59 cm.\nTherefore, the mean point is (23, 59).\nFirst, we plot this point on the graph. Then, we draw a straight line using a ruler that passes through (23, 59) and balances the plotted points, with roughly half the points above the line and half below.

Common mistakes

✗ Drawing a line that does not pass through the mean point (23, 59).\n✗ Drawing a "line" by connecting the dots.\n✗ Drawing a line that doesn't follow the trend of the data (e.g., slope is too steep or too flat).
