A new adult Vizsla dog comes to the vet. The dog has a mass of 25 kg. Estimate the height of this dog.
How to approach this question
1. Find 25 kg on the x-axis (Mass) of your scatter graph.
2. Draw a vertical line up from 25 kg until you hit your line of best fit.
3. From that point on the line of best fit, draw a horizontal line across to the y-axis (Height).
4. Read the value from the y-axis. This is your estimated height.
Full Answer
Approximately 62 cm (Accept answers in the range 61-63 cm depending on the line of best fit drawn).
To estimate the height of a dog with a mass of 25 kg, we use the line of best fit drawn in part 6(c).
1. Locate 25 on the Mass (x-axis).
2. Move vertically up from this point to the line of best fit.
3. Move horizontally from this intersection point to the Height (y-axis).
4. Read the value on the y-axis. Depending on the exact line drawn, this value should be around 62 cm. Any value within a reasonable range (e.g., 61 cm to 63 cm) would be accepted.
Common mistakes
✗ Reading from a plotted point instead of the line of best fit.\n✗ Misreading the scales on the axes.\n✗ Providing an answer outside the acceptable range based on a reasonable line of best fit.
