In coronary heart disease, the coronary arteries become narrower. A build-up of fatty material can cause a blockage in a coronary artery. Table 2 shows how a blockage in a coronary artery affects blood flow. Describe the trend shown in Table 2.
In coronary heart disease, the coronary arteries become narrower. A build-up of fatty material can cause a blockage in a coronary artery. Table 2 shows how a blockage in a coronary artery affects blood flow. Describe the trend shown in Table 2.
How to approach this question
Look at the two columns in the table. As the numbers in the first column (percentage blockage) go up, what happens to the numbers in the second column (blood flow)? Describe this relationship.
Full Answer
As the percentage of the coronary artery that is blocked increases, the blood flow in cm³/minute decreases.
The trend shown in Table 2 is a negative correlation. As the percentage of the coronary artery that is blocked increases, the blood flow in cm³/minute decreases. For example, with 0% blockage, the flow is 100 cm³/minute, but with 80% blockage, the flow drops to only 2 cm³/minute.
Common mistakes
✗ Just quoting data points without describing the overall trend.
✗ Not mentioning both variables (blockage and blood flow).
