How to approach this question
Think about what pathogenic bacteria produce once they are inside the body that can disrupt normal bodily functions and cause illness.
Full Answer
The bacteria release toxins (poisons).
When a person ingests food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria, the bacteria multiply in the intestines. As they grow, they produce and release harmful chemicals called toxins. These toxins irritate the lining of the stomach and intestines, leading to the characteristic symptoms of food poisoning, such as inflammation, vomiting, and diarrhoea, which are the body's attempts to expel the toxins.
Common mistakes
✗ Saying the bacteria "eat" the stomach lining.
✗ Saying the immune system causes the symptoms (while the immune response is active, the toxins are the direct trigger for these specific symptoms).
