AQA GCSE · Question 05.1 · Infection and Response

The protist that causes malaria is passed from one person to another person by mosquitos. What term describes an organism that passes a pathogen from one person to another person?

How to approach this question

Recall the specific biological term for an organism, like a mosquito or a tick, that transmits a disease-causing agent from an infected individual to another without causing the disease itself.

Full Answer

Vector
A vector is an organism that does not cause disease itself but which spreads infection by conveying pathogens from one host to another. In the case of malaria, the mosquito is the vector. It ingests the malarial protist when it bites an infected person and then injects the protist into a new person during a subsequent bite.

Common mistakes

✗ Host (the host is the organism that is infected by the pathogen). ✗ Pathogen (the pathogen is the microorganism that causes the disease, in this case the protist). ✗ Carrier (a carrier is an infected individual who can transmit the disease but may not show symptoms; a vector is typically a different species).
