AQA GCSE · Question 09.1 · Socio-cultural Influences and Well-being in Physical Activity and Sport

State three different types of sponsorship a sportsperson may receive.

How to approach this question

List three distinct categories of sponsorship. Think about what an athlete needs to compete and how a company could provide it.

Full Answer

1. Financial/funding: Receiving money to cover costs like training, travel, and living expenses. 2. Clothing/footwear: Being provided with kit, trainers, or specialist apparel for free. 3. Equipment: Being given specialist equipment such as tennis rackets, golf clubs, or bicycles.
Sponsorship is a commercial agreement where a company provides support to an athlete, team, or event in return for publicity and brand promotion. This support can take many forms: direct financial payments, provision of essential clothing and footwear (known as 'kit deals'), provision of expensive equipment, or access to top-class training facilities.

Common mistakes

Listing three very similar things, such as 'shirts', 'shorts', and 'socks' instead of the broader category of 'clothing'. The question asks for different 'types' of sponsorship.
