Figure 10 shows the wavelengths of some types of electromagnetic radiation. Suggest one piece of equipment that can be used to detect infrared radiation.

    How to approach this question

Infrared radiation is essentially heat radiation. Think of a device that is designed to "see" or detect heat.

    Full Answer

    A thermal camera
Infrared (IR) radiation is emitted by all objects as thermal energy (heat). Specialised equipment is needed to detect it. A thermal imaging camera (or infrared camera) detects this radiation and converts it into a visible image, often showing hotter objects as brighter colours. Night vision goggles also often work by detecting infrared radiation.

    Common mistakes

✗ Suggesting a thermometer. A thermometer measures temperature, but it doesn't detect the radiation itself in the same way a camera does.\n✗ Suggesting a normal camera, which is designed to detect visible light.
