Suggest one precaution taken to reduce the hazard caused by radioactive waste from power stations.
Radioactive waste produced by nuclear power stations has a long half-life.
Suggest one precaution taken to reduce the hazard caused by radioactive waste from power stations.
How to approach this question
Think about the properties of radioactive waste (it's dangerous and lasts a long time). What would be a sensible way to store it to keep people and the environment safe?
Full Answer
Store it in a secure location deep underground.
High-level radioactive waste from nuclear power stations remains hazardous for thousands of years due to its long half-life. To reduce the hazard, it must be isolated from the biosphere. The standard procedure is to vitrify the waste (encase it in glass), seal it in thick steel canisters, and then bury it deep underground in geologically stable locations, such as in salt mines or granite formations. This provides multiple barriers (glass, steel, rock) to prevent radioactive material from leaking into the environment.
Common mistakes
✗ Suggesting disposal at sea or sending it into space, which are not current practices.
✗ Suggesting something that is not a long-term solution, like keeping it in the power station.
