AQA GCSE · Question 05.1 · Forces
A student investigated how the acceleration of a trolley varies with the resultant force on the trolley. Figure 10 shows some of the equipment used. Figure 10 shows the force F which acts through the string. What name is given to force F?

How to approach this question
Think about the specific name for a force that is transmitted through a string, rope, or cable when it is pulled taut.
Full Answer
Tension
The force transmitted through a string, rope, cable, or similar object when it is pulled tight by forces acting from opposite ends is called tension. In this experiment, the weight of the mass hanger pulls the string, and this pulling force, or tension, is what accelerates the trolley.
Common mistakes
✗ Calling it "pulling force", "gravity", or "weight". While the weight of the masses causes the force, the force itself within the string is called tension.
