AQA GCSE · Question 05.4 · Interpreting Results and Evaluating Findings

Make two comments about the trends shown on the graph.

    How to approach this question

Look at the two lines on the completed graph. For the "Download" line, describe its general direction from left to right (2013 to 2018). Is it going up, down, or staying the same? This is the trend. Do the same for the "Streaming" line. You need to make one comment for each trend, or a comment comparing the two.

    Full Answer

Comment 1: Sales from Downloads have decreased over time. Comment 2: Sales from Streaming have increased over time. (Other valid comments include: Streaming sales overtook Download sales in 2016. The decrease in downloads is slowing down. The increase in streaming is accelerating.)
By observing the completed graph:\n1. **Downloads Trend:** The solid line representing Downloads starts high on the left (at £397m in 2013) and ends low on the right (at £123m in 2018). This shows a clear downward trend. So, a valid comment is "Sales from Downloads are decreasing."\n2. **Streaming Trend:** The dashed line representing Streaming starts low on the left (at £106m in 2013) and ends high on the right (at £829m in 2018). This shows a clear upward trend. So, a valid comment is "Sales from Streaming are increasing."\n\nA comparative comment could also be made, such as "Streaming became more popular than Downloads after 2015/2016".

    Common mistakes

✗ Simply stating values from the graph without describing the trend (e.g., "Downloads were 397 in 2013").\n✗ Making a vague comment like "the lines are different".\n✗ Confusing the two lines.
