Table 3 shows the rate of transpiration in four different plant species.
Calculate how many times greater the rate of transpiration of species A is than the rate of transpiration of species B.
Give your answer to 2 significant figures.
Table 3 shows the rate of transpiration in four different plant species.
Calculate how many times greater the rate of transpiration of species A is than the rate of transpiration of species B.
Give your answer to 2 significant figures.
How to approach this question
1. Find the rate of transpiration for species A from the table (310).
2. Find the rate of transpiration for species B from the table (254).
3. To find out "how many times greater", you need to divide the larger number by the smaller number. Calculate 310 ÷ 254.
4. The question asks for the answer to 2 significant figures. Round your calculated value correctly.
Full Answer
Rate of A / Rate of B = 310 / 254
= 1.22047...
To 2 significant figures, the answer is 1.2.
Number of times greater = 1.2
**Step 1: Identify the values from the table.**
- Rate of transpiration for species A = 310
- Rate of transpiration for species B = 254
**Step 2: Perform the calculation.**
To find how many times greater A is than B, we divide the rate of A by the rate of B.
Calculation: 310 / 254 = 1.2204724...
**Step 3: Round to 2 significant figures.**
Significant figures are the first non-zero digits in a number.
The first significant figure is 1.
The second significant figure is 2.
We look at the third digit to decide whether to round up or down. The third digit is 2. Since this is less than 5, we keep the second digit as it is.
So, 1.2204724... rounded to 2 significant figures is 1.2.
The rate of transpiration of species A is 1.2 times greater than that of species B.
Common mistakes
✗ Dividing the wrong way around (254 / 310).\n✗ Not rounding the answer at all.\n✗ Rounding to 2 decimal places instead of 2 significant figures.
