AQA GCSE · Question 07.1 · Socio-cultural Influences and Well-being in Physical Activity and Sport

Define skill and ability.

How to approach this question

Provide a clear and concise definition for 'skill' and then a separate definition for 'ability'. For 'skill', mention that it is learned. For 'ability', mention that it is innate or inherited.

Full Answer

Skill: A learned action or behaviour with the intention of bringing about pre-determined results, with maximum certainty and minimum outlay of time and energy. Ability: An inherited, stable trait that determines an individual's potential to learn or acquire a skill.
Skill and ability are fundamental concepts in motor learning. Abilities are the genetic building blocks (e.g., coordination, balance, reaction time) that a person possesses. Skills are specific actions that are developed through practice, combining various abilities. For example, a person might have the natural ability of good hand-eye coordination, which gives them the potential to learn the skill of catching a ball.

Common mistakes

Confusing the two terms, stating that skills are inherited or abilities are learned. Not being specific enough in the definitions.
