Describe the relationship between arousal level and performance level in the inverted-U theory.
Describe the relationship between arousal level and performance level in the inverted-U theory.
How to approach this question
Explain the three key parts of the theory: 1. As arousal increases, performance increases. 2. There is an optimal point of arousal for peak performance. 3. If arousal becomes too high, performance decreases.
Full Answer
The inverted-U theory states that as arousal increases from a low level, performance also increases, up to an optimal point. This is the point of peak performance. If arousal continues to increase beyond this optimal point, performance will start to decrease. The relationship looks like an upside-down 'U' on a graph.
The Inverted-U Theory suggests that there is a relationship between arousal and performance. At low levels of arousal, performance is poor because the athlete is not sufficiently 'psyched up'. As arousal increases, performance improves. However, there is a point of optimal arousal where performance is at its peak. If the athlete becomes over-aroused (too anxious or excited), their performance suffers due to factors like loss of concentration and tense muscles. The optimal level of arousal can vary depending on the sport and the skill (e.g., a golfer putting needs lower arousal than a weightlifter).
Common mistakes
Only describing two parts of the relationship (e.g., just saying 'as arousal goes up, performance goes down'). It's crucial to mention the initial increase, the optimal point, and the subsequent decrease.
