AQA GCSE · Question 08.1 · Socio-cultural Influences and Well-being in Physical Activity and Sport
Define intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation.
Define intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation.
How to approach this question
Provide a clear definition for 'intrinsic motivation', focusing on internal rewards. Then, provide a clear definition for 'extrinsic motivation', focusing on external rewards.
Full Answer
Intrinsic motivation: The drive to participate in an activity for its own sake, for feelings of enjoyment, pride, or personal satisfaction.
Extrinsic motivation: The drive to participate in an activity in order to win a reward, such as a trophy, medal, or money, or to avoid punishment.
Motivation is the drive to succeed. Intrinsic motivation comes from within the individual. They participate because they love the sport and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment. This is often seen as more powerful and sustainable. Extrinsic motivation comes from outside sources. While rewards like trophies can be effective, over-reliance on them can sometimes reduce intrinsic motivation.
Common mistakes
Mixing up the two definitions. Forgetting to mention specific examples of rewards (e.g., pride for intrinsic, trophies for extrinsic) to clarify the definitions.
