AQA GCSE · Question 14.1 · The Human Body and Movement in Physical Activity and Sport

Define 'adduction'.

Use a sporting example in your answer.

How to approach this question

1. Provide the precise definition of adduction. 2. Think of a sport where a limb is brought from an outward position back towards the centre of the body and describe that action.

Full Answer

Definition: Adduction is a movement towards the midline of the body. Example: In swimming, bringing the arms towards the body during the pull phase of breaststroke or front crawl.
**Definition:** Adduction is a type of movement that brings a limb or other body part closer to, or towards, the midline of the body. It is the opposite of abduction. **Sporting Example:** A clear example is the downward phase of a jumping jack (star jump), where the arms and legs are brought back towards the body's central line. Another example is in gymnastics on the rings, when a gymnast performs an 'iron cross', they are using their adductor muscles to hold their arms out, and bringing them in would be adduction.

Common mistakes

Confusing adduction with abduction (movement away from the midline). Providing a poor or incorrect sporting example.
