AQA GCSE · Question 14.2 · The Human Body and Movement in Physical Activity and Sport
Name the type of joint where adduction can take place.
How to approach this question
Consider the different types of synovial joints (hinge, pivot, ball and socket, etc.). Identify which type allows for movement in multiple planes, including adduction and abduction.
Full Answer
Ball and socket joint
Adduction (and its opposite, abduction) can occur at joints that allow movement in the frontal plane. The primary type of joint that allows this is the ball and socket joint, such as the shoulder and the hip. Condyloid joints, like the wrist, also allow for a form of adduction.
Common mistakes
Naming a hinge joint (like the elbow or knee), which only allows flexion and extension.
