Leadership, Management, and Supervision

Learning outcomes

  • Distinguish between leadership, management, and supervision.
  • Apply management principles by Taylor, Fayol, Mintzberg, and Drucker.

Leadership vs Management

  • Management: Focuses on systems, structures, and maintaining the status quo. (Planning, organizing, controlling).
  • Leadership: Focuses on people, vision, and driving change. (Inspiring, motivating).
  • Supervision: Front-line management, overseeing day-to-day tasks of operational staff.

Classical Management Theories

  • F.W. Taylor (Scientific Management): Believed workers are only motivated by money. Advocated for breaking jobs into tiny, repetitive tasks and paying 'piece-rate' (pay per item produced).
  • Henri Fayol: Identified 5 functions of management: Planning, Organizing, Commanding, Coordinating, Controlling (POCCC).
Practice Question

According to F.W. Taylor's Scientific Management, what is the primary motivator for workers?

Common Mistake

Mintzberg's Roles

Don't confuse Mintzberg's roles with Fayol's functions. Fayol is what managers should do (POCCC). Mintzberg observed what managers actually do (Interpersonal, Informational, Decisional roles).

Modern Theories

  • Mintzberg: Managers act as Figureheads (Interpersonal), Monitors (Informational), and Negotiators (Decisional).
  • Peter Drucker: Introduced Management by Objectives (MBO). Managers and subordinates agree on goals together, improving motivation.
Practice Question

Under Mintzberg's managerial roles, acting as a 'Spokesperson' for the department falls under which category?

Examiner Tip

Exam Focus

If a scenario shows a manager dictating every move and paying staff based on output, it's Taylorism. If a manager sits down with staff to agree on yearly targets, it's Drucker's MBO.
